Giant hogweed sap, in combination with moisture and sunlight, can cause severe skin and eye irritation, painful blistering, permanent scarring and blindness. Contact between the skin and the sap of this plant occurs either through brushing against the bristles on the stem or breaking the stem or leaves. Immediately wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and keep the area away from sunlight for 48 hours. This plant poses a serious health threat; see your doctor if you think you have been burned by giant hogweed. If you think you have giant hogweed on your property, do NOT touch it.
We have been dealing with Giant Hogweed infestations for a number of years on behalf of property developers, local councils such as Camden and the residential sector. A variety of control methods are available including digging and cutting methods, as well as the use of herbicides. Some control methods are best used on small sites and others for large sites.
In order for the control effort to be successful, we will have to ensure that no additional seeds are being introduced to the area. If your site is along a water way , we will want to coordinate with other properties upstream from your site to limit the source of seeds flowing downstream that could re-infest your site. It is very important to ensure that the giant hogweed plants are controlled before they produce seeds and that all existing flower heads are removed and disposed of safely. With no influx of seed and a few years of persistent control efforts giant hogweed plants can be eradicated.
